Simon Kolawole – Nominated for Media Visionary of the Year at the MOI Awards

Simon Kolawole is a Nigerian journalist and media entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of Cable Newspaper Limited, publishers of TheCable, a trusted independent online news platform in Nigeria.

Born in Ilorin, Kwara State, he grew up in Mopa, Kogi State, after losing his father in 1976. In 1989, he moved to Lagos to study Mass Communication at the University of Lagos.

Kolawole has a Master’s degree in Governance and Development from the University of Sussex through the Chevening Scholarship. He also trained at SOAS, University of London, and has participated in leadership programmes at Yale University and Harvard Kennedy School under the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders initiative.

His journalism career started with inspiration from the late Dele Giwa. He worked with major Nigerian media houses including Encomium, TheNews/TEMPO, Financial Standard and ThisDay. 

At 29, he became the youngest editor of a national newspaper in Nigeria, and in 2007, the youngest Editor and Associate Director of ThisDay.

In 2012, he launched TheCable to promote accurate and accountable journalism. He also heads the Cable Newspaper Journalism Foundation and Ideas Planet Ltd, and serves on the boards of LEAP Africa and Rise Networks.
