Nyesom Wike CON – For the Capital Leadership Award at the MOI Awards 2025

Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has been nominated for the Capital Leadership Award at the MOI Awards — a nod to a journey that began far from the spotlight. Born on December 13, 1964, in Rumuepirikom, Obio-Akpor, Rivers State, and rooted in the Ikwerre community, Wike grew up around everyday people whose needs were practical and urgent.

He attended Government Secondary School, Eneka, where he completed his O-level examinations before advancing to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUT). At RSUT, he earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree and subsequently attended Nigerian Law School, being called to the bar in 1997.

Demonstrating a dedication to continuous learning, Wike later obtained a Master of Arts in Political and Administrative Studies from RSUT and, in March 2025, was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Law by the University of Calabar, recognising his contributions to governance and public administration.

Wike is widely recognised for his hands-on, pragmatic approach to governance, coupled with a strong will and decisive leadership style. Known for his accessibility, determination, and ability to deliver results under pressure, he combines a strategic mindset with a focus on grassroots impact.

His leadership is characterised by accountability, resilience, and a commitment to social development, earning him respect across party lines and among his constituents.

Wike’s political career began at the grassroots, where he was elected Executive Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in 1999 and re-elected in 2003, serving a total of eight years. His tenure at the local government level was marked by infrastructure development, community engagement, and improved service delivery.

In 2007, he was appointed Chief of Staff to Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, further consolidating his reputation as a skilled administrator and strategic leader.

At the federal level, Wike was appointed Minister of State for Education in July 2011, later rising to Federal Minister of Education in September 2013. During his tenure, he prioritised educational access, governance reform, and policy modernisation, setting the stage for broader national impact.

In 2015, Wike was elected Governor of Rivers State, a position he held for two consecutive terms until 2023. His administration is widely recognised for transformative infrastructure development, including modern road networks, bridges, flyovers, and urban renewal projects.

He championed healthcare reforms, expanding hospital facilities, initiating free maternal and child health programs, and equipping medical centres with modern technology.

Education remained a central focus under Wike, with initiatives to renovate schools, introduce ICT-based learning, and align education with employability skills. Wike also prioritised youth empowerment and job creation, supporting entrepreneurship, agriculture, and private sector investment to stimulate economic growth in the state.

Wike declared his presidential ambition in March 2022, running under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He emerged as the first runner-up in the party’s primaries, demonstrating his national appeal and political influence.

Though he did not secure the nomination, his outspoken advocacy for governance reforms and his strategic approach to political engagement solidified his standing as one of Nigeria’s most influential leaders.

In August 2023, President Bola Tinubu appointed Wike as Minister of the FCT, following Senate approval. In this role, Wike applies his extensive administrative experience to oversee the development, planning, and management of Nigeria’s capital, further enhancing his national profile as a transformative leader.
