Folorunsho Alakija is a prominent businesswoman and philanthropist whose bold vision propelled her from the fashion industry to the top of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Her journey began with a career in banking before she launched a fashion label, Supreme Stitches, in 1996.
Her greatest achievement came in 1993, when she applied for and was granted an oil prospecting license, leading to the creation of Famfa Limited, which later discovered oil in the Agbami Field offshore of Nigeria.
Alakija’s career is a testament to her tenacity. She successfully fought the Nigerian government for a majority stake in her oil block, a victory that cemented her influence in the industry. As a true architect of impact, she established the Rose of Sharon Foundation, which provides scholarships and business grants to widows and orphans.
She has been ranked by Forbes as one of the world’s 100 most powerful women and was, as of 2021, the richest woman in Africa.
