Austin Avuru is a celebrated Nigerian geologist, entrepreneur, and corporate leader whose career has transformed Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
He is best known as the Co-founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Seplat Energy Plc, a leading independent energy company listed on both the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange.
His leadership marked a turning point in Nigeria’s quest for indigenous participation in an industry once dominated by multinationals.
Avuru studied Geology at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, graduating in 1980 with first-class honors. He began his career at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), where he spent over a decade as an exploration geologist, gaining invaluable experience in upstream operations.
His transition to the private sector later saw him serve as Technical Manager at Allied Energy Resources and later as the Managing Director of Platform Petroleum Limited, where he honed his reputation for building strong indigenous firms.
In 2009, Avuru co-founded Seplat Petroleum Development Company (now Seplat Energy Plc). Under his stewardship as CEO, Seplat became Nigeria’s flagship indigenous oil company, pioneering the acquisition of oil blocks divested by international oil majors.
His vision positioned Seplat as a model for how local expertise and capital could drive Nigeria’s energy independence. By 2014, Seplat’s dual listing on the NSE and LSE was a milestone that showcased the global viability of African-grown companies.
Avuru’s influence extends beyond corporate success. He has been an outspoken advocate for local content policy, sustainable energy practices, and the development of Nigerian talent in oil and gas. His leadership style emphasizes transparency, governance, and innovation, qualities that set Seplat apart as a global player in the energy industry.
In recognition of his impact, Austin Avuru has received numerous accolades, including awards for corporate governance, leadership excellence, and contributions to Africa’s energy sector. Today, he continues to shape the industry through AA Holdings, his investment and advisory company, nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs and energy leaders.
