When the story of modern leadership in Nigeria is told, one name that stands out is Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, an economist, banker, philanthropist, and now the Governor of Abia State.
His journey is not just one of professional excellence but also of resilience, vision, and an unwavering connection with the people he serves.
Born on February 18, 1965, in Umuru Umuehim, Isialangwa South Local Government Area of Abia State, Otti’s story reflects discipline and determination from an early age.
He excelled in academics, finishing as the best student in his secondary school examinations. His brilliance continued at the University of Port Harcourt, where he graduated with a First Class degree in Economics in 1988.
He later earned an MBA from the University of Lagos and sharpened his leadership skills at world-renowned institutions including Columbia, Stanford, Wharton, and INSEAD.
How he started off his career
Dr. Otti’s professional life began in the banking sector, where he rose through the ranks with remarkable speed.
From his early days at Citibank to his tenure at UBA and First Bank, he distinguished himself as a leader capable of driving growth and transformation.
His most notable impact came as Group Managing Director and CEO of Diamond Bank Plc, where he spearheaded one of the bank’s most transformative eras.
What sets Alex Otti apart is not just his corporate success but his deep commitment to public service. His political journey was not without setbacks, he contested the governorship of Abia State multiple times, facing challenges, court battles, and political disappointments.
Yet, his persistence became a symbol of hope for many. In 2023, running under the Labour Party, Otti finally secured a resounding victory, defeating his rivals in one of the most keenly contested elections in Abia State.
On May 29, 2023, he was sworn in as the fifth democratically elected Governor of Abia State, ushering in a new era of people-centered leadership.
Alex Otti’s journey into politics
Alex Otti’s journey into politics has been nothing short of remarkable. In 2014, he entered the race for the governorship of Abia State under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Although the Court of Appeal initially declared him the rightful winner of the 2015 election, the Supreme Court later overturned that decision, reinstating the incumbent.
Not discouraged, Otti returned in 2019, again contesting under APGA. The outcome was another controversial loss.
Yet, his determination never wavered. In 2023, on his third attempt, he contested under the Labour Party and won by a landslide, defeating candidates of the PDP, APC, and YPP.
This victory cemented his place as the fifth democratically elected Governor of Abia State.

Beyond his impressive résumé, Governor Otti is known for his humility, philanthropy, and accessibility.
He has consistently invested in education, community development, and initiatives that empower ordinary citizens.

His contributions have been recognised with several honorary doctorate degrees: from Babcock University (2009), the University of Port Harcourt (2012), and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2013).
On the personal front, Governor Otti is a devoted family man. He is married to Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, and together they are blessed with three grown-up children.
In recognition of his exemplary leadership, Governor Otti will receive the honorary ‘People’s Choice Award’ at the MOI Awards 2025, on November 29, 2025, at the Landmark Event Centre, Lagos.
