Akindele Olufunke Ayotunde—professionally known as Funke Akindele and famously as “Jenifa”—born in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. She is the second of three children born to a medical doctor mother and a retired school principal father. Her early upbringing in Lagos exposed her to both academic and performance-oriented influences, laying the groundwork for her future career in entertainment. She earned her OND in Mass Communication from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic and later pursued a Law degree at the University of Lagos.
Funke first rose to prominence through the UNFPA-sponsored television series “I Need to Know” (1998–2002), where she portrayed a perceptive secondary school student. This early exposure showcased her natural talent and established her as a relatable actress in Nigeria’s youth-focused television space. Her breakout moment came in 2008 with the self-produced comic film “Jenifa,” a portrayal of a naive village girl trying to navigate urban sophistication. The role earned her the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2009, cementing her status as a leading actress in Nigerian cinema.
Building on this success, Funke transformed the character into the long-running TV series “Jenifa’s Diary” (2015–present), winning multiple Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for Best Actress in a Comedy in 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2022. She holds the record for the most nominations—and total wins—for an actress in AMVCA history, with six awards .
As a filmmaker and producer, Funke has repeatedly dominated the Nigerian box office. She directed and produced “Omo Ghetto: The Saga” (2020) — grossing ₦636 million, “Battle on Buka Street” (2022) — earning ₦668 million, and “A Tribe Called Judah” (2023). She is the second director in Nollywood to achieve over a billion-naira gross, with an overall box office record exceeding ₦4.7 billion—making her Nigeria’s highest-grossing director
In 2019, Funke made her feature directorial debut with the political satire “Your Excellency,” which earned over ₦186 million at the box office and stood among the year’s highest-grossing films Beyond her production achievements, she leads Scene One Productions, a multimedia production firm behind Jenifa’s Diary, Industreet, My Siblings and I, and other celebrated content—showcasing her entrepreneurial vision and creative versatility
In 2022, Funke ventured into politics as the deputy governorship candidate for Lagos State under the People’s Democratic Party, demonstrating her commitment to public service and social change
Her contributions extend to public health advocacy: in December 2024, she was appointed National Goodwill Ambassador for Nigeria by UNAIDS—a role reflecting her ongoing influence in driving social awareness and activism
Off-screen, Funke has been candid about her work ethic and values. She describes herself as an “extremist” and “perfectionist,” attributing her success to intentionality, spiritual grounding, and hard work—values she believes separate the exceptional from the average.
